About
A PorchLight and Iowa City Poetry collaboration, The Free Generative Writing Workshops provide a space for career writers, curious beginners, writers of all income levels and stages of life. Our goal is to make it easy to meet and learn from some of the most talented writer/teachers living in or passing through Iowa City. Every month a new writer leads a generative workshop, presenting a prompt inspired by their own preoccupations, passions, or interests. It has been an adventure, and we are continually inspired by the creative concentration of participants, and the powerful beginnings the workshop generates.

A program of PorchLight and Iowa City Poetry, The Fairweather Writing Sessions connect creative writers with groups of formerly homeless Iowans to help them find find joy, expression and agency through the act of creative writing. Join us on the fourth Saturday of every month from 1-2:30pm, for a trouble shooting, and goal setting session. Come ready to talk about your project, or to just listen to how others are making their way through a long writing project. Writers working on projects over 30 pages, of any genre are welcome.

Join us for our summer fundraising series held on the roof of Market House. Each event brings together a prose writer, a poet and a singer-songwriter for a magical evening of words music and views.

Enjoy conversation, connection, and community over light snacks and wine. PorchLight's Lights-On Salon Series aims to bridge University and Community by providing a space for University writers, local artists, students, and community members to engage in dialogue around interdisciplinary topics.
Originally supported by an Iowa City Public Arts Grant, the Writing Garden program continiues with new sessions for summer 2025. Come join us for new writing and garden tending sessions lead by local writers. We will ground our bodies, and let our creative minds blossom. This is a free event and all ages and levels of experience are welcome.
