About the event

Join us at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Black Angel Restaurant in Iowa City, for a special preview event for our MusicIC Festival. "Looking at the Black Angel" will featuring our festival quartet and local jazz musicians performing themes from the main festival program and showing how they can be altered through improvisation. The pieces are Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" and George Crumb's "The Black Angels." They will be joined by eight local writers who will read their pieces inspired by the music, Iowa City's Black Angel statue, and other prompts.

Featuring Samantha Bennett, Celia Hatton, Kenny Lee, and Tricia Park, joined by Blake Shaw and Dan Padley.

Writers include Dan Campion, David Duer, Mackie Garrett, Becca Klaver, Kashelle Lockman, Jennifer MacBain Stephens, Linda Muller, and Corinne Stanley. Some of the pieces were generated at a special workshop held at Porchlight Literary Center.
