BIO

Carrie Schuettpelz is an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Iowa. Prior to joining the faculty at Iowa, she was a homelessness policy advisor in the Obama Administration. She holds a Master's in Public Policy from Harvard University, an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin, and a BA from the University of Iowa. She is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In her debut book, The Indian Card, Carrie Schuettpelz (Lumbee) goes on a journey of discovering her own Native-ness, by better understanding the process of tribal enrollment. Through data culling and historical research, Schuettpelz traces the roots of the ideas of tribal membership, blood quantum, and lineage systems, while simultaneously interviewing Native people on their own, very real, very modern experiences with enrollment. Schuettpelz weaves her own personal narrative of tribal enrollment, bringing us a rarely told, but highly important story of what it means to "be Indian enough."
