“The essay, with its tremendous capacity for facts and figures, is capable of offering a meaningful arrangement of information. In my experience, there is plenty of information in the world, but very little sense made of it.” –Eula Biss Unlike many writing classes you may have taken, this one is not a workshop: rather than reading and critiquing each other's writing we will instead be focusing on tools that can help us with our writing, specifically research. Facts and figures can both enhance your work and inspire it. In this class we’ll learn more about research, from Google tips and tricks to the information hidden in locked databases. In each session I will introduce different research tools and methods. In the second half of the class, you’ll have the opportunity to practice what you have learned and to respond to writing prompts based on your research. All students will also receive a one-hour one-on-one research consultation. This class is open to students across forms; from fiction, poetry, and playwriting to non-fiction. This class will help you develop your research skills, and discover ways research can generate new writing. Laura Crossett holds an MFA from the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa and an MLIS from Dominican University. She worked in public libraries for fifteen years and has extensive research experience in libraries, archives, and online from her years as a librarian and freelance journalist.
